Be the first to offer your condolences on John's Tribute Wall
John Maurice Stephens of Anaconda, Montana died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on June 30, 2013, after a fight against cancer.
John was born on November 13, 1939. His parents were John M. and Marie Stephens from Ogden, Utah. He grew up in Ogden and attended Ogden High School where he met the love of his life, Mary Ellen Larsen. The High School sweethearts were married on February 6, 1959 and later had their marriage solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. John then attended Weber State College in Ogden and earned his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration.
John and Mary Ellen had their first child Teresa "Tessie" Ann Stephens while living in Ogden. They then moved to Helena Montana to start the First Security Bank in Helena. While living there they had 2 more children, Jennifer "Jenny" Stephens and Jeffrey Scot Stephens.
They later moved to Anaconda where John helped to start up the First Security Bank of Anaconda. He spent 25 years at the First Security Bank before joining the Southwest Montana Federal Credit Union in 1992. He was promoted to Chief Executive Officer/President in 1996 and served in that position until he retired in 2007. He was instrumental in expanding the Federal Credit Union into a Community Federal Credit Union, which increased its membership substantially. One of the achievements that he was very proud of was the new Credit Union building, which was relocated from its prior location at 200 E Park St to its current location at 1035 West Park St in Anaconda. After retiring from the Credit Union he served as a member of the Board of Directors until the time of his death. Through the years at the Credit Union, he made many great friends and he will always treasure those friendships and memories.
He belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in many church callings throughout his life. He loved the Anaconda Ward members who were like family to him.
He was very involved in the Boy Scouts of America and was awarded his Eagle Scout. He served as a Scout Master in Helena Montana and supported the Scouting program throughout his life. He loved camping, fishing, hunting and golfing. Some of his favorite memories were his family vacations at Whitefish Lake and Maverick Mountain Ski Area among many other vacation spots. He enjoyed visiting his son in Las Vegas on many occasions over the years.
In 1998 and 2000 he was proud to welcome his granddaughters, Bailee Marie Oxnam and Kelsie Rose Oxnam. He loved to watch them play softball and volleyball and they considered him their #1 Fan.
John was preceded in death by his Parents John Maurice Stephens Sr. and Marie (Tueller) Stephens and his sister Karen (Stephens) King all of Ogden, Utah.
John is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Ellen (Larsen) Stephens and daughter, Tessie and her husband Greg Oxnam and their 2 children, Bailee Marie and Kelsie Rose Oxnam of Anaconda, daughter Jenny Stephens of Georgetown Lake, son Jeff Stephens of Missoula, his brother Doug Stephens and his wife Terrie of Ogden, Utah and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at 11:00 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 1300 West Park St. in Anaconda. Burial will take place at Mount Olivet Cemetery following the funeral service. A luncheon will be held at the church following the burial.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Anaconda Pintler Hospice, 118 E. 7th St., Anaconda, MT 59711.
