John Lacey Obituary

Dr. John Lacey, native son of Anaconda, was born to Irish immigrants Michael and Hannah Lacey on January 28, 1929, and left us on June 10, 2013, at the age of 84.

John attended local schools, graduating from Anaconda High School in 1946. He then began study at Carroll College for a career in medicine, progressing to Marquette Medical School, Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he graduated with his medical degree. While in medical school, he met Patricia Kunde. They were married on June 12, 1954, in Milwaukee.

John and Pat began their life together in Northern California where John began his training in general surgery. In 1955, the first of eight children was born. John completed his surgical residency and a tour of duty in the United States Air Force. He was certified by the American Board of Surgeons in 1963, followed by his induction as a fellow of the American college of Surgeons in 1965. He and Pat returned to his hometown of Anaconda in 1961to start his professional practice of 33 years and raise their growing family of five which soon grew to eight.

John was a passionate man, known for his sense of humor, honesty and down to earth approach. An active man, John was always busy with a project, from wiring to plumbing to carpentry. He loved the Montana outdoors, fly fishing, hunting and snowmobiling. Golfing with his Thursday afternoon group, Wade, Tom, Sammy and Jack was the best part of his week. Starting in his early years, he developed a love of music; jazz to Dixieland to Irish tunes. A lifelong piano player, he loved to sing along.

The cabin at Georgetown Lake was a special place for John. Beginning as a small log cabin, John and his family built it into a treasured family retreat.

John leaves behind Patricia, his wife of 59 years; daughters, Maureen, Mary, Patty (husband Jeff); sons, Michael (wife Maria Teresa), John (wife Connie), Tom (wife Joan), Dan (wife Jennifer), and Paul (Melinda). John also leaves behind 16 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

John was preceded in death by his mother Hannah, father Michael, brother ,Mike and sister Catherine (Kay) Cole.

The legacy John leaves is his loving commitment to family and his tireless commitment to the practice of medicine. He will be missed.
