Gregory Richard Mayrer, “Preacher,” August 16, 1950 - Oct. 4, 2023.
Greg loved old soul music, classic cars, photography, and American history.
Greg’s love of history was evident in his work restoring the Little Church on the Hill in Oakhurst, California with the Ancient and Honorable Order of E Clampus Vitus (ECV), or the “Clampers.” He served with pride as Noble Grand Humbug for the Grub Gulch Chapter of the Clampers, a fraternal organization dedicated to the preservation of the heritage of the American West, prior to moving to Maxville, Montana in 2006.
Greg’s love of photography was on display at his house in Maxville, in which he hung sepia-toned images of the old farmhouses and gravestones he captured with his camera. It wasn’t unusual to find Greg deliberating just the right frame for those photos while humming along to Sam Cooke, Smokey Robinson, and Al Green on the radio.
In Montana, Greg volunteered on the Garnet Preservation Association Board of Directors and made innumerable friends who would often find “Preacher” at the VFW in Maxville. As a minister in the Universal Life Church, “Preacher,” with his long black coat and wide-brimmed hat, officiated marriages and burials for his friends in Maxville.
Greg’s love of old cars is reflected in the 1928 Buick he kept in immaculate condition and the 1965 Buick LeSabre Custom Convertible that he was so excited to pass on to his daughter.
Greg is survived by his daughter, Jess Mayrer, sister Fran (Mayrer) Prokosch, brother-in-law Bruce Prokosch, brother Dave Mayrer, sister-in-law Nina Mayrer, sister-in-law Lucille Mayrer, nephews Jason and Eric Prokosch, niece Michelle (Mayrer) Graziano, and grandnephews William and Owen Prokosch and James Graziano. He was preceded in death by his mother Meredith (Getty) Mayrer, father George F. Mayrer, and brother John Mayrer.
