Elwyn “Speed” Samuel Kingrey passed away on November 25, 2022, at his residence in Philipsburg. He was 92 years old.
Speed was born October 6, 1930, to Edward Leroy Kingrey and Elizabeth Anna Leishman in Twin Bridges. He was middle of 9 children. He attended school in Virginia City until the 8th grade and spent much of his youngest years with an aunt and many cousins.
On June 20, 1950, at the age of 19, he married Donna Belle Myers in Twin Bridges. Their early years of marriage involved several moves until they settled in Philipsburg in 1965. Together, they had three children, Oliver, Cindy, and Kenneth, who is deceased.
Speed worked a variety of labor-heavy jobs, and was a master to them all. He spent years as a ranch hand, including breaking horses-something he was proud to share. He transitioned to working as a gas station attendant, mine worker, and city employee just to name a few. His later years were spent assisting at the local laundry mat and pizza establishment, Friday Night Pizza.
Throughout his years' Speed enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, time with family, and four-wheeling. He often spent time helping family and friends with repairs and projects. There was never a project too big or small that he didn’t have the knack for.
Speed was the epitome of strength, heart, and quiet love. He was the fixer of all things, witty as they come, and feistier than ever- even until his last day. His cheer and bright spirit will be dearly missed.
Speed was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Donna; their son Kenneth Kingrey; both his parents; and all of his siblings.
He was survived by his son Oliver (Patsy); daughter Cindy all of Philipsburg. Surviving grandchildren Corey (Stephanie) Kingrey of Philipsburg, Bridget (Zachary) Sarrazin of Clyde Park, and Samuel (Meghan) Short of Anaconda. Surviving great-grandchildren include Alexis (son Carter James Brown), Katlin, Kordell, and Blair Walkley of Philipsburg; Greyson Sarrazin of Clyde Park; Emersyn, Huntley, and Fischer Short of Anaconda. Additional survivors include many beloved nieces, nephews, and life-long friends.
