William “John” Best passed from this earth June fourth with his daughter Lisa Olsen by his side. He was 91.

 John was born August 4, 1934 in Anaconda Montana to Hedley and Melita Best, the youngest of three children.

 He lived his entire life in the Deer Lodge valley. He met his wife Linda in 1980 and they were married in Pocatello Idaho November 19, 1982. He became dad to her four children from a previous marriage.

John spent most of his life as a farmer, rancher and millwright at Louisiana Pacific Sawmill from which he retired after 25 years of service. John loved horses, especially draft horses which he would drive on the wagon train. He also drove a single horse and carriage in parades and weddings. He enjoyed all the animals and helping the kids with their 4-H projects. He enjoyed watching the area kids at their basketball games and 4-H auctions. John never met a stranger. As a member of the ELKS years ago, he enjoyed the dinners, dances and visiting with everyone.

 He was preceded in death by his parents Hedley and Melita Best, uncle Fernley Best, brother Charles Junior Best, and sister Margaret Joan McCardey. He is survived by his wife of close to 45 years, Linda Best, children Danette Belew (Troy Meagher), David Belew (Debbie), Lisa (Shane) Olsen and Erica Belew, grandchildren, Jordan Senecal, Robert (Ali) Olsen, Ryan Olsen (Abie), Hannah and Emma Belew. Also surviving are 5 great grandchildren, sister-in-law Mary Newman and her family, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

 Memorials to be made to organizations of donor’s choice or local animal shelters.

 Memorial to be held September 12, 2026 at the Elks Lodge in Deer Lodge. Time will be announced closer to the date.

 Cremation has taken place.
