Robert D. Smith of Opportunity, MT passed away Oct. 5, 2017. He was born October 12, 1938 in Whitehall, MT to Ray and Mary Olga Smith.
He attended schools in Anaconda, MT before leaving to work at the Anaconda Smelter to support his parents. He met the love of his life Rose Marie Smith in Butte, MT. They would have been married for 59 years on Oct. 10, 2017. He worked for the Anaconda Company until 1980 when an injury prevented him from returning to work. He was a long-standing fireman for the Opportunity Volunteer Fire Department before his retirement. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and hunting in the Big Hole Valley.
He is survived by his wife, Rose, and children, Carol Miller, Brenda (James) Anderson, Bobby (Shelly) Smith, and Paul (Billie Jo) Smith all from Anaconda; Grandchildren Erik Miller, Jeff Miller, Kelli Miller, Chris (Jessica) Anderson, Tracy (Cody) Swainston, Travis Anderson, Shauna (David) Smith, Jackie Smith, Tiffany Smith, Laura Beth (Ray), and Matt Hansen; Great grandchildren Dylan, Bryer, Jase, Addison, Chad, Heidi, Scotty, and was looking forward to meeting his future great-grandbaby. He is also survived by his brother Donald Smith and a sister Susan Smith, sister-in-law, Shirley "Bill" McGivern and bother-in-law-Gene "Judy" Reilly, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Ronald Smith and Billy Smith, and his son David Smith.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 10th, at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Crackerville, MT. A luncheon will follow at the Opportunity Community Club.
