Robert J Mitchell

Robert J. Mitchell 88, of SLC, UT passed away at his home December 18, 2013. Robert was born on Oct. 19, 1925 to Margaret (Dwyer) Mitchell and Frederick Mitchell in Hollywood, California. At the age of 2 Robert's family returned home to Anaconda where his story began. Robert attended Anaconda High School and graduated in 1944. He then joined the Army and was stationed on the Island of Shemya, off the coast of Alaska. While in the service he received a medal for excellent marksmanship. After serving his county, he returned home and met Donna Gannon and the two were married Dec 1st 1951. In 1953 they welcomed their first child, Lynn M. Mitchell. In the fall of 1966 they welcomed their second child Robert G. Mitchell. While working for the Anaconda Copper Company he also had the opportunity to work in Portorious, Chili. After 3yrs of being overseas Robert moved the family back to Anaconda. They later moved with the Anaconda Company to Toole, UT. Robert spent many years in Utah and in the summer of 1994 he and Donna moved back to Montana to live on Flat Head Lake. In 2003 Robert moved back to Salt Lake City, to be with his grandchildren and great grandchild. Robert had many fond memories of growing up in Anaconda. He would share stories of the back alley boxing matches, ice skating, and hanging out in Washoe Park. Robert and his brother Daniel built the Haufbrau restaurant in Anaconda in 1962. Even though they owned it for only a short time, it was one of the best times for him. He enjoyed serving good food and having great conversations with friends that would stop by the restaurant. Robert was very quick witted with a wonderful sense of humor. He had stories that could last a lifetime. One of the most important things in Robert's life was his family. He would always say "You never turn your back on your family. You stay with them through thick and thin, because that's what family is about." Robert is survived by his wife Donna Mitchell, son Robert G. Mitchell, granddaughters Courtney & Oomee Mitchell-Milavong, grandsons Mike Davis, Ian Davis, great grandson Robert J. Mitchell III, and sister in law Lori (Mitchell) Norling and numerous nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his sisters Mary Ann Mitchell and Patsy McVicars, brothers Fred and Daniel Mitchell, and his daughter Lynn M. Mitchell. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 2nd, 2014 at St. Peters Church at 11:00 AM in Anaconda. Graveside service will immediately follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
