Nellie Utahna Meason Kennedy, 16 May 1921 - 24 Mar 2017
Nellie Utahna Measom Kennedy, at a seasoned age of 96, passed away August 24, 2017 in Philipsburg, Montana. She, as her mom, was born in the home of her Grandmother, Nellie Taylor, whose name she bears, May 16, 1921, in Salem, Utah, to Thomas & Vera (Taylor) Measom. She favored her middle name Utahna, which her mother lifted from a box of chocolates.
As a child, her family moved around much, in the heart of the depression, as work was hard to find. They moved to New Chicago, near Drummond where at age 6 her brother Taylor was born. Her father Roy farmed in New Chicago and she attended a 2-room school until the 8th grade. The family moved to Philipsburg in 1936, where she graduated from Granite HS in 1938. Utahna then graduated from Henager Business College in Salt Lake City, & later worked for the Selective Service and then Deputy Clerk & Recorder in Philipsburg where at the height of the depression, with her Dad being disabled by Rheumatoid Arthritis, she gave all her earnings shy of some tithing, to her Mom, who became the primary bread winner. She eventually worked for Taylor Knapp Mining Company for years, even after it closed.
Utahna married Basil Hoyt Kennedy November 3, 1950, who preceded her in death on Sep. 9, 1994. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, and son, Jon Taylor Kennedy who died at Child birth Feb 3, 1960. Utahna is survived by step children Don Dee (Margie) and children Graydon, Francee & Kim; Karen (Larry) and her children Stuart & Craig; and her children Kal (Toni) and children Sheri, Kandace, Kevin, Steve & Scott; Launa, and children Jason, Ryan & Kyle. Utahna leaves a legacy of 13 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, and counting.
Utahna was a lifetime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Philipsburg where she served in many callings from the Relief Society to Gospel Doctrine teacher which left her with a great love of the community, the Church, and a firm knowledge of its divinity.
Memorial services are Thursday Aug. 31, 2017, 1 p.m., at the LDS Church in Philipsburg in which she loved and served. Grave dedication follows at the Philipsburg cemetery at 2:30.
