In Loving Memory of Mladen Babich August 15, 1929–January 7, 2025
Mladen "Babo" Babich passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of courage, generosity, and a life well-lived. Born in Bileća, Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mladen's remarkable journey began amidst the challenges of World War II. Drafted at the tender age of 15, he served with the Chetnik forces, bravely helping to rescue downed American airmen during the conflict—a testament to his enduring spirit and commitment to freedom. After being honorably discharged, he studied photography and opened his own photography studio in Mostar.
In 1956, Mladen escaped the hardships of post-war Yugoslavia, seeking asylum in Austria before choosing the United States as his new home. He arrived in New York with little more than hope in his heart, determined to build a better life. From his first job with Eastman Kodak to eventually settling in Anaconda, Montana, Mladen embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm. He proudly became a U.S. citizen in 1961, cherishing the freedoms and values of his adopted country.
Mladen’s work ethic was unparalleled. After beginning his Montana chapter with the Anaconda Company, he spent three decades as the beloved Produce Manager at Buttrey Foods. Alongside his professional achievements, he pursued his passion for photography, capturing life’s precious moments—from weddings and family portraits to the breathtaking beauty of Montana’s landscapes.
Wherever he went, Mladen made lasting friendships. A man of many talents, he was an avid hunter and fisherman who found joy in the serenity of Georgetown Lake, Flint Creek Valley, the Big Hole River, and Alaska’s wilderness. He built close bonds with local ranchers, often sharing outdoor adventures and stories with them. Over the years, he proudly harvested 63 elk, a moose, and countless deer and waterfowl. Known for his legendary hunting tales, he also delighted in sharing his culinary prowess, frequently barbecuing and smoking meats in his cherished smokehouse—one of the last free-standing in Anaconda.
Mladen was deeply devoted to his community and his Serbian heritage. A member of Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church, he was also active in numerous organizations, including the Anaconda Sportsmen Club, Elks Lodge #239, and the Bagdad Shrine. His contributions to the annual Serbian Festival in Butte and other community events were legendary, as was his warm smile and unyielding kindness.
Above all, Mladen loved his family. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Natalie Yalovich Babich; his son, Wayne Babich; his parents, Obren and Djurdja Babich; and his siblings. He is survived by his son, Vladimir Babich, as well as nieces and nephews in the United States, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Mladen's life was a testament to resilience, gratitude, and the pursuit of dreams. He often reflected on his journey with pride, declaring, “Freedom should not be taken for granted. I have lived the American Dream.” As we mark the inauguration of President Trump, we can imagine Mladen looking down with a smile, pleased to witness the continued vibrancy of the nation he so dearly loved. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
May his memory be eternal!
