Martin "Marty" Joseph Mavrinac Sr.

Martin “Marty” Mavrinac passed peacefully from this world in his sleep, where he wanted to be, in his home.  He left us on Monday, January 1, 2024, in the early morning hours.

Martin “Marty” Joseph Mavrinac, Sr was born to Betty Olheiser and Martin George Mavrinac on December 14, 1949, in Anaconda.  He joined five siblings.  Aside from his military service, he spent most of his life in Anaconda.

Marty and Susan Shafford were united in marriage at St. Peter’s Church in Anaconda on June 27, 1970, and enjoyed 53 years together.  Three sons were born to the marriage, Marty Jr, Matt, and Jason.  They did not welcome a girl until granddaughter, Andrea, was born.

Marty served in Vietnam as a member of the United States Marine Corp.  He took great pride in being a member of this elite group.  He was a very patriotic individual and was a lifetime member of the Marine Corp League, Pvt Mike Detachment.

Marty had a heart as large as our Montana Big Sky.  He loved his country (flying the United States Flag and Marine Corp Flag at his home).  He cherished his family.  He volunteered hundreds of hours for the Anaconda Ambulance Service for many years, and he was always searching for ways to increase his knowledge. Also, Marty spent over 40 plus years along with his wife Susan, volunteering for Anaconda Pintler Search and Rescue.  He was instrumental in promoting a permanent County levy for the Search and Rescue for equipment improvements and training.

He worked for the Anaconda Co. until it closed and Cleveland Wrecking when they demolished the Smelter.  He worked at Montana State Prison for several years before joining the Army National Guard.

Marty enjoyed big game hunting and had many fond memories of time spent with his family at “Hunting Camp.”  It was one of the disappointments of his life that medical issues put an end to those treasured days.  However, he did continue to site his rifle every season and patrol the hills.  His favorite novels were mysteries.  He loved to travel until his health slowed him down.  Marty enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, and he cherished his two great grandchildren.

Marty is survived by his spouse, Susan, at the family home.  Sons:   Marty Jr (Tamara), Matt (Tonya) and Jason.  Grandchildren:  Mason (Taylor) Belt, Mt, Andrea, Butte, and Tristin of Anaconda, two great grandchildren Owen and Aulora of Belt, Mt.  His brother Joe (Diane) of Deer Lodge. Marty is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews whom he greatly loved and Susan’s extended family.

Martin was proceeded in death by his parent’s, brother and sister in-law John and Bertha Stoppler, sisters and brother in-laws Mary and Bob Loback, Angie and Roy Laws, Eva and George Rennfield, Dolores and Gene Hurlbert.  The ashes of his favorite dog, Missy Sue, will be interred with him.

Martin’s family would like to recognize Cindy Reed FNP-C for her excellent care of Marty. Special thanks for their assistance to the family are offered to Paul Beausoleil, Harvey “GRIZ” Deas of the Marine Corp League and to Lee Burt of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Thank you to the Anaconda Ambulance Service who responded and cared for him many times.

Marty was a diamond in the rough!!

Was he opinionated? Yeah!

Was he bull-headed? Definitely!!

Family and Friends will gather to honor Marty on Wednesday, January 10, 2024. Public viewing and visitation will take place from 9:30 to 10:30 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 217 West Pennsylvania Ave., Anaconda followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 am. The celebrant will be Father Dougald McCallum. Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery with full Military honors following the Mass. A luncheon will be held in the Hunthausen Center of Holy Family Catholic Church following interment.
