Mass of the Christian Burial for Mrs. Margaret Ziegler, 100, will be celebrated from Holy Family Catholic Church, Saturday, September 23rd, at 10:30 a.m. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the service. Margaret passed away at her daughter and son-in-law's (Mary and Tim Magness) Billings home where she had resided since Christmas 2016. She was with Mary, Tim, daughter Brenda, and granddaughter Breanna when she passed. The weekend prior to her passing she was visited by her daughters Sharon, Kathy, Brenda, and Bobbie; her granddaughter Wanda, and her great granddaughter Brooke. They enjoyed good food and laughs as Margaret's wit and sense of humor prevailed and blessed them with a memorable weekend.
Margaret was born on January 20, 1917, on a farm near Anamoose, North Dakota, the eleventh of thirteen children born to Hans and Katharine Schmaltz. Her father delivered her on a stormy winter night because the doctor was unable to travel out to the farm. Margaret was not expected to survive, but the Lord had other plans for her. She resided in the same area during her childhood.
In 1937, Margaret met the love of her life, Andrew "Andy" Ziegler. They were married on Oct. 15, 1940, in Anamoose, N.D., and thus started their 69 years together. She was a devoted and loving wife.
Margaret and Andy farmed in the Drake, North Dakota area until 1957, when the Ziegler family moved to Anaconda. Margaret worked as a dietary aide at St. Ann's Hospital from 1966 to 1979, where she was known for the wonderfully delicious salads she made.
Margaret was a very talented woman. She loved to cook and bake for her family. She could turn leftovers into a feast to feed whoever happened to drop by the house. Margaret taught herself to sew and made many of the outfits her children wore as they were growing up. She used scraps from the material to make quilts, placemats, potholders or whatever she could think of so as not to "let the material go to waste." She also liked to crochet, draw, and garden. Margaret was always available to babysit her grandchildren whenever requested. She would play with her grandchildren and sing songs to them.
Margaret looked forward to holidays and family celebrations which called upon her cooking and baking skills to everyone's delight. No one went hungry and often left with containers filled with goodies to take home.
Margaret and Andy were blessed with five daughters who they loved and protected and taught to live their lives in a good and honest fashion. Margaret's family was her most valuable asset.
Survivors include five daughters and their spouses: Sharon (and the late Cliff) Arneson, Kathy Harris, Brenda (Terry) Wilkinson, Mary (Tim) Magness, and Bobbie (Stan) Irish, 11 grandchildren and spouses; Steve (Cathy) Arneson, Mark (Rachel) Arneson, Wanda (Dan Skippy) Stordahl, Brad Goldberg, Abby (Jim) Bacon, Kurt (Courtney) Wilkinson, Andrea Magness, Kourtnie (Levi) Gardner, Breanna (Tyler) Rolandson, Stephanie (Paul) Santiago, and Lauren Irish. She is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren plus two that will be born later this year, six great- great-grandchildren, two brothers-in-law Pete and Louie Ziegler and three sisters-in-law Rose Miller, Evelyn Weninger, Mae Ziegler, and numerous nephews, nieces and other relatives.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Andy, her parents, mother-in-law and father-in-law (Andrew and Barbara Ziegler), son-in-law Cliff Arneson, grandson John Goldberg, grandson-in-law Austin Childress, and infant great-grandson Carter John Bacon, nine brothers and spouses Tony (Betty), Mike (Blanche), Joe (Lizzy), John (Billie), Tom (Donna), Christ (Rose), Paul (Arlene), Anton, and Pius, three sisters Lee (Sam) Paoletti, Ann (John) VanGrinsven, and Caroline Schmaltz; brothers-in-law and spouses Joe (Lena) Ziegler, Don Ziegler, Felix (Helen) Ziegler, Adam (Joann) Ziegler, Mike Ziegler, Virgil Ziegler, and infant John Ziegler, Tony Weninger, and Jack Miller, sister-in-law Bernie Ziegler.
