Lewis M. Mitchell b. 5/29/1951 d. 1/10/2020
On January 10, 2020 our beloved Lew went to Heaven.
How does one describe, in a few words, his love for Jesus, his kindness, his gentleness, his love of family and friends? How does one describe his zest for life and adventure? There is not enough space.
Lew was born in N. Wilkesboro (Cycle), N.C. He was raised on the family farm along with his brother Vernon. After graduation from N. Iredell H.S. in 1969 he attended Virginia Computer College where he received his degree in computer programming. He went to work for Ithaca Textiles for a brief time prior to being drafted in 1971. Basic training was in S.C. and since he wasn't called up for active duty, he went to Colorado Springs to finish his commitment to the Army. That is where he fell in love with the Rocky Mountains and everything outdoors including motorcycles.
While the Forest Service provided him the opportunity to move around the Rocky Mountain states, it was his love of riding his motorcycle that took him all over the country. During his stay in Wyoming, he met the love of his life Gwen. Circumstances kept them from committing to one location until Lew drove across Montana's high line to propose marriage. They moved to Tooele, UT and were married in 2002. In 2005 Lew retired and they moved to their happy place, Southwest Montana.
Lew never met a stranger and has friends across the U.S. He will be sorely missed by the lifetime like-minded buddies he made in Denver 45 years ago.
Lew will be missed and is survived by the family he married into. His love Gwen, his three stepdaughters and especially by the nine grandchildren who called him Grampa Woo. There are many others in WY, CO, and WA.
Lew will be missed and is survived by his extended family in North Carolina. His mother Rachel Mitchell (94), his brother Vernon (Brenda) Mitchell, their daughter's family, his beloved aunts and numerous cousins.
Lew was preceded in death by his father Frank Mitchell, several aunts and uncles, brother in law Geoff Miller, and granddaughter Tobie Ann Robson.
May the weather in Heaven be perfect and the roads smooth my love.
Services will be held in N. Wilkesboro, N.C. at a later date.
