Leo Raymond Scholler

Anaconda

Leo Raymond Scholler, affectionately known as "King Papa," passed away surrounded by his loved ones, on October 10, 2024, at the age of 80. Leo fought many health battles over the years but continued to be a symbol of resilience and strength until the very end.

Born on July 6, 1944, in International Falls, MN to Otto and Ethel Scholler, he was the fourth of six children. In 1959, with his whole family packed up, and his father on his way to a job in Washington, a broken-down car landed them in Garrison, MT where the next chapter of Leo’s life would begin. He lived a very modest but happy childhood there, often telling stories of all the mischief he and his siblings would cause, and all the things they did to live and survive the simple life. While Leo did not have much for formal education, he was the smartest and most handy man who created his own language that his family would grow to love, cherish, and giggle about.

In 1959 he also met the love of his life Karen Verworn, and seven years later they would elope in Wallace, ID. This was the beginning of a beautiful 57-year union that not only stood the test of time but was a true love that everyone around them witnessed over the years. In 1974 they moved to Anaconda where they made the rest of their life together. Above everything, Leo's proudest accomplishment was the amazing family he created with his “woman”. Together, they raised three children – Steve, Stefanie ”Curly”, and Travis. They were blessed with nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who were the center of Leo’s world and who all thought he really was the King.

Leo's work ethic was as strong as his character. He dedicated many years to various roles, including positions at Phosphate Mine, The Anaconda Smelter, Snapshot Photo, and he concluded his career at Montana Resources. Shortly after his retirement, he and Karen bought a yellow mustang and had many plans to adventure. Unfortunately, Leo suffered a fall that resulted in a brain injury, changing the trajectory of his life, but never his spirit.

Leo was known for his kindness and his ability to make others smile, often using humor to lighten any situation he found himself in. He was hilarious, witty, and downright charismatic. He enjoyed the outdoors and was happiest camping with his loved ones or taking a four-wheeler or “side-by-side” ride. He loved music and was a very talented musician. He also enjoyed card games, sweets, and a good western. More than anything he loved people. He loved telling stories of his life and had the best memory – often recalling the smallest detail, which only added to the quality of these stories that we will now all hold close to our hearts.

We will miss everything about him – his laughter, his smile, his hugs, his jokes, and his stories. Most of all, we will miss the pure light he brought to all our lives. His good, kind heart, his do-anything-for-anyone attitude, and his ability to laugh and love deeply made him the best man we have ever known. He never let little things bother him and lived with an impressive sense of peace and joy. His legacy of love, humor, and unwavering kindness will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Leo was a devout Christian and his unwavering faith in God remained until his final days, where we are taking peace in knowing he was accepted into heaven with open arms.

He is survived by his wife Karen, son Steve (Tami) Scholler, daughter Stefanie (Roy) Thompson, son Travis (Katie) Scholler. Grandchildren: Colten (Angie) Scholler, Taylor (Brittany) Scholler, Jordan (Kramer) Smith, Dillan (Paige) Bahr, Diamon Scholler, T.J. Scholler, Austin (Kassidy) Scholler, Payton Scholler, and Dakota Scholler. Great Grandchildren: Bridger and Gunner Smith, Bentley Bahr, and Owen and Paisley Scholler. Siblings: Daniel, Marshall, Axel (Rosie) Scholler, as well as numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Leo also shared special bonds with his neighbors, Jim, Kira, Kloey, Brock, Lexi, and Tommy Strande, his camping buddies Zane and Vickie Spehar, and we can’t forget his shadow - his beloved dog Mellow.

He is preceded in death by his parents Otto and Ethel Scholler, sister Jane Thompson, and little brother Marty Scholler.
