On the morning of February 13, 2024, Joe passed away at his home in the care of Anaconda Pintler Hospice and surrounded by his family. He was 80 years old. His health had been in decline for several years due to a number of serious illnesses.
Joe had a long career in mining and heavy construction. He started with the Anaconda Company in various positions, most notably as an overhead crane operator, where he worked until the company’s closure in 1980. He continued to operate heavy equipment, working for Pegasus Gold, NA Degerstrom, and Gray Rock Trucking, until he retired from Jordan Contracting in 2011.
As a young man, Joe enjoyed hunting and riding motorcycles with friends. Summer vacations were important to him, with Disneyland being a favorite destination. Christmases were spent in Northern California with family. Later in his life, he traded motorcycles in for four wheelers and enjoyed riding with friends and his grandson. Time spent with friends was always important; he would go for coffee at the Copper Bowl and later to breakfast at Donivan’s and other various locations. To those friends, please know you meant a lot to him.
Joe is survived by his wife, Bernadine “Babe” Hannon; his daughter, Joanne Schmitt, and her husband, Bruce; his grandson, Kevin Schmitt, and his wife, Cantalina Nguyen; his sister, Rita Earl; and many nieces and nephews. Of note, Peggy (Ford) Barclay and her husband, Scott, were very close to him and provided much appreciated love and support over the years. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ursula and Joe Hannon, and his sisters, Connie Ford, Ann-Marie Hettich, and Donna Hannon.
