Joseph M. Mckernan

Joe McKernan, 86 1933-2019 Joe spent his final days reminiscing and sharing memories with his family and with his humor intact. Joe was born in Elk Park in Jan 3, 1933 to Jim and Irene McKernan. Joe was very proud of his Irish heritage and was a devout Catholic. He was raised on the family dairy known as the "McQueen Dairy" in Elk Park. Joe spent a lifetime in the milk business finally retiring at age 74. He then worked at Lincoln School as a playground attendant for 8 years and was "Papa Joe" to many. His passion was riding horses and he spent many summers braking horses. He enjoyed competing in horse show, omakosee, and parades. He looked forward to his yearly vacations in the Bob Marshall Wilderness with family and the horses. Joe graduated from Whitehall High School in 1951. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn of 65 years and their 5 children -- Jody (Kevin), David (Robin), Mark, (Jackie), Laura (Danny), Julie (Brad). He was blessed with 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was proud that his latest great-grandson was named after him. He is also survived by two sisters, Irene and Rose and brother-in-law Jim and Mary Ann Rae, Les and Carol Blom and Ron and Nancy Rae.
