John Boyd Hatch

December 14, 1967 — August 19, 2013

John Boyd Hatch, "A Cowboy's Cowboy", was born December 14, 1967 in Pocatello, Idaho and died August 19, 2013 in Doris, Calif. At the age of nine, he and his family moved to Helena. There he spent the next five years in school. He played Little League Football. The family then moved to Sheridan, Mont. where he played basketball for the Sheridan Panthers high school team. He finished his high school education in Anaconda. Boyd gained his love for horses in Pocatello, where his father broke and trained race and stock horses for his grandfather, John Ansel Hatch. His grandfather, uncle Bob and aunt Jennie Ostler of Helmville and Sheridan helped him with his interest in working with cattle, horses and cattle dogs. He became an excellent horseman, cattleman and one to shoe horses. He worked on several cattle ranches in Utah, Idaho and Montana. Deer Lodge is the home where he made many wonderful friends. He spent the last eight years working in Byron, Calif. for the Duane Martin Jr. Livestock Cattle Co. He loved his work and enjoyed all the time he spent with many wonderful friends. He had great respect for his employer, Martin Jr. He moved to Doris, Calif. with a large herd of cattle for the summer in June of this year. Boyd had become friends with Chuck and Shirl Widson, owners of the Willow Creek Ranch where the cattle were being grazed before shipping for Martin Jr. Cattle Co. On the morning of August 19, Boyd began his day's work along with his favorite horse and dog. He ended his journey here on earth doing what he loved, his horse and dog by his side. Boyd is survived by his daughter Diamond and granddaughter Marci; father and mother, John A. "Jack" and Joyce Hatch; sisters, Jackie McMurfrey (Galen), Dee Ann Graa (Robb Slaughter), Sandra Joy Layland (Trent), and Vicky Lynn Kaufmann (Marty).
