Jean Harmon

March 14, 1923 — February 25, 2016

Jean Harmon passed quietly on February 25, 2016. May she rest in peace with no pain, fear or sorrow forevermore. She was born March 14, 1923 in her grandmother's house on the old Fuller homestead on Newlan Creek at White Sulphur Springs, MT to John and Ida Short. She was raised on the Bar A V Ranch near Black Butte. She attended a one room school, where she got her education through the 8th grade. Her father raised sheep, and she often told of the lonely hours and days she spent herding those sheep. She met Philip Harmon and they ran away to get married at Livingston, MT when she was 15. Several years and 3 children, Gloria, Dallas, and John, later, they moved to the boom town of Anaconda, MT where Phil got a permanent job at the Smelter. They started out at a home in Mill Creek and then bought the property in Sunnyside, where they made their forever home, and had 2 more daughters, Beth and Renee. Jean was a very creative and intelligent woman. She had a deep rooted love of music and animals and named their home "Wild Goose Acres". She was secretary-treasurer of the Anaconda Saddle Club for many years, and also of the Montana Old Time Fiddlers Association. Her paintings won many awards at the tri-county fair and were proudly displayed on the walls of her home. She played the harmonica, and entertained at many functions and gatherings. After the children left home, she worked as the playground supervisor at the Dwyer Elementary School and also at the Book Store on Main Street. She was preceded in death by her son John in 1975, her husband Phil in 2011, and her son Dallas in 2012. She is survived by daughters Gloria Champine-Pugh, of Arivaca, Az, Beth (Allan) Keenan of Anaconda, Renee (John) Siders of Tacoma, Wa, daughter-in-law Allene (Dallas) of Anaconda, 11 grandchildren, and a growing number of descendants. Our lives will never be the same without her. A graveside service will be held at Mount Olivet Cemetery on Thursday, March 3rd, at 1:00 p.m.
