Emilia Maria DeMaio Olson Preato, known as Emily, died at the Community Nursing Home of Anaconda, Montana on June 11, 2019 following a long illness. She was 99 ½.
Emily was born on January 24, 1920 in New Rochelle, New York, to her parents, Louis DeMaio and Maria (DeRosa) DeMaio. After attending New Rochelle schools, she moved to Torrington, CT where she married George Olson in 1945. They spent most of their 30 years together on Mountain View Drive in Harwinton.
After George's death, Emily married Mario Preato in 1990 and they moved to Phoenix, AZ where they lived until his death in 2003. Emily then moved to be with her son, David, and his wife and family in Anaconda, MT. She spent many wonderful hours with her children and grandchildren before moving into the nursing home in Anaconda.
Emily and George provided a loving home for their three sons and extended family members who enjoyed special reunions over the years. She was a joyful member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and its choir. Known for her Italian cooking and generous hosting, she truly loved being surrounded by friends and family.
She is survived by her three sons: George (Jean) Olson of Montpelier, VT; David (Mary) Olson of Anaconda, MT; and Jonathan (Lynn) Olson of Torrington, CT. She is also survived by her sister, Lucy Gross, as well as eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, George Olson and Mario Preato; her brothers Michael DeMaio and Louis DeMaio and her sisters Connie Carrier, Louise Salvatore and Rose Panko.
Emily will be buried in a private ceremony at a later date at Hillside Cemetery in Torrington, CT.
