Denis "Kim" Spence

Denis Kim Spence, known as "Kim" to his friends and loved ones, was born on December 15, 1941, and passed on October 17, 2023 of natural causes. He leaves behind a legacy filled with remarkable accomplishments, unwavering dedication, and a passion for the outdoors.

Kim's love story began in January 1963 when he married his beloved wife of 60 years, Blanche Ellen Elliott. They established their first home in Weippe, Idaho, and later moved to Porterville, California, where he dedicated his life to developing and managing the family ranch until 2004. In his final years, Kim found peace and happiness in the beautiful surroundings of Philipsburg, Montana, which he proudly called home.

Kim was a walnut farmer, known for his unmatched work ethic and bulldog tenacity. He built a Walnut Dehydrator from the ground up, which not only processed his own crops but also supported other growers in the community as well. His ingenuity didn't stop there; he, along with the guidance and assistance of his knowledgeable friends, constructed a walnut shaker and sweeper, considered impressive accomplishments by professional farm equipment designers.

Beyond his work in agriculture, Kim was an avid hunter and fly-fisherman. He shared his love for the outdoors as a hunting guide in Montana for many years. His cabin home in Philipsburg, Montana, lovingly named No Horse Ranch, held a special place in his heart.

Kim was also a Bench-Rest Shooting aficionado, earning several championships in the high-precision sport, including two World Championships. His passion for shooting demonstrated his unwavering commitment to excellence.

In addition to his professional achievements, Kim had a warm and witty personality. He had an uncanny ability to make people laugh and possessed whip-smart intelligence. He was a staunch patriot, deeply loving his country. His military service as a Gunner's Mate on the USS Midway was a source of immense pride for him.

Denis Kim Spence is survived by his loving wife, Blanche Ellen Spence, daughters Shelli Spence and Deborah Huber, grandchildren Landon Curtis, Lucas Curtis, and Cayleigh Curtis, and nephew Brett Hemphill. Some of his most cherished memories involved hunting and fishing adventures with his grandchildren.

Services in honor of Kim will be held at Philipsburg Community Church, 208 Community Ave, Philipsburg, MT 59858, on October 30, 2023, at 2:00 pm. Military honors will follow the service at the church. At the completion of military honors, a cookies and punch reception will be held in the hall of the Philipsburg Community Church.
