June 8, 1948 — December 27, 2019

Following an extended illness, Daniel Lee Hook left this life for the next on December 27, 2019. Dan was born in Hammond, Indiana, on June 8, 1948, to Margaret (Carlson) Hook and Russell Hook joining his ‘big sister' Darlene. Dan was raised in Indiana, his fondest memories as a youngster was travelling with his family, having been to 48 states during summer vacations. In his adult life he continued with his love of travel, especially his trips to Italy. Dan graduated from Purdue University. Upon graduation, Dan left Indiana behind and moved to Bozeman to attend Montana State University graduating with a master's degree in Wildlife Management. While in Bozeman Dan's life intertwined with fellow graduate students especially the McCarthy, Douglass and Childress families, who remained in his life over the years. Upon graduation Dan began his career as a biologist with Montana Fish and Game, (now Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks) he would work for MFWP for his entire thirty-year career. During his career Dan worked with Ecological Services on Canada geese on the Missouri and bighorn sheep, elk and mule deer along the Rocky Mountain Front. During his career he lived in Livingston, Fort Benton, Augusta and ultimately Anaconda. When commemorating Dan's service with MFWP, then Director Patrick Graham stated, "I would like to congratulate you and offer my sincere appreciation for the 20 years of dedicated service you have completed. I am confident you will continue to serve the sportsmen of Montana and the wildlife resource as well in the future as you have in the past." Dan retired from his wildlife biologist position in Anaconda in 1993. After his retirement Dan consulted for MFWP Wildlife Division. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Russell, and his beloved sister Darlene. He is survived by his brother-in-law John Schoon, nieces Lauren (Jeff) Peterson and family, Joleen (Dean) Ridder and family and nephew John (Diane) Schoon and family. Dan is also survived by his good friends John and Nora McCarthy and family and Jeanine McCarthy and family. The outdoors played an important role in Dan's life whether with his job at MFWP or camping, rafting or hunting. He was an avid spectator at many of the ‘McCarthy kids' football, wrestling and soccer sporting events. He also enjoyed many summer vacations with his brother-in-law and sister and their family. A remembrance gathering will be held in Augusta during the summer. Following Dan's wishes cremation has taken place through Longfellow Finnegan Riddle Funeral Home in Anaconda.
