Barbara M. Hood December 7, 1934 – June 22, 2025

Barbara M. Hood, of Philipsburg, Montana, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, adventure, and dedication to others. Born on December 7, 1934, in Twin Falls, Idaho, she was the daughter of Wilford and Kate Claycomb and grew up alongside her beloved sister, Kathryn J. Claycomb.

Barbara graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School in California in 1953 and went on to earn both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in teaching biological science, a field that matched her love of nature and learning. She began her teaching career at Brinley Junior High and later taught at Eldorado High and Cimarron High in Clark County, NV where she made a lasting impact on generations of students. She retired from teaching in 1995.

That same year, Barbara and her husband Tom made a big move to Montana, where they embraced small-town life and quickly became active members of their new community. Barbara served as president of the Coalition for a Drug-Free Granite County and formed strong friendships through her involvement with the Red Hat Society and her local swim club.

Barbara was an outdoor enthusiast to the core. Whether it was hunting, fishing, or camping, she often led the way, usually harvesting the biggest or the most. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren have countless memories of exploring Nevada, Montana, and numerous National Parks by her side, learning to identify flowers, birds, and all things wild. Summers in Montana were especially cherished. Long days spent hiking through the woods and helping build their home, and cozy nights around the campfire with s’mores and stories about all the adventures we shared together.

She and Tom Hood shared 48 wonderful years together. Family meant everything to Barbara.  She was lovingly known as “Mom,” “Grandma,” and “Oma” to her seventeen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren, and she poured her heart into every one of them.

Barbara had a genuine curiosity about the world and a deep love for her community. She’ll be remembered not just for her knowledge and sense of adventure, but for the way she made people feel heard, and cared for.
