Anna Devine

December 22, 1923 — December 10, 2014

Ann (Granny) Devine passed away with grace and relative ease on Wednesday night December 10, at her daughter's Missoula home, just two weeks short of her 91st birthday. Ann was born to Bridget and Francis McGinley on December 22, 1923 in Southern Cross, Montana, where she joined 7 siblings. The McGinley brood increased to ten, and the family moved to their long-time home at 624 Cherry Street in Anaconda. This residence would eventually come to be known as the mother-house in a McGinley-dense neighborhood some call McGinleyville. After attending St Paul's grade school and in 1941 graduating from St. Peter's high school, Ann set out for the big city of San Francisco to see the world. She returned one month later, relieved to be home, and vowed to never again leave her beloved Anaconda for any extended period of time, a vow she managed to keep until her death. She began working as a teller at the Daly Bank, where she worked for 34 years. Her beautiful smile, warmth and charm touched the hearts of many loyal customers. She began dating the spirited Charlie Devine several years later, and the two wed on August 5, 1952. They bought a house on Oak Street in the heart of McGinleyville, where she joined her siblings and their families, with whom she remained intimately connected throughout her entire life. Ann and Charlie eventually had four children: Chuck, Sean, Tacker and Jill. Ann earned the name "Granny" when she fell in love with her son Tacker's three boys (Ryan, Aaron and Taylor), and later her granddaughter, Michelle. She spent many summer afternoons watching "the boys" play baseball, and many winter evenings at the hockey rink praying for goals, as she tried to warm her notoriously cold feet. Ann is preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Bridget, her husband, Charlie, her son Tacker, and her siblings Maureen McGinley, Eileen Ferguson, Rip McGinley, Rosalyn Nelson, Peggy Skakles, Josephine Leary, John McGinley and Joe McGinley. She is survived by her sister, Pat Holland, her sisters-in-law Gert Hotti and Marilyn McGinley, son Chuck, daughters Sean and Jill, son-in-law Loren Mell, daughter-in-law Tana Devine, grandchildren and their spouses Ryan and Sarah Devine, Aaron and Tiffany Devine, Taylor and Naomi Devine, Michelle Devine, and her great grandchildren Charlianne, Haddi, Norah, Emery, and Tacker-2. Ann is also survived by her many beloved nieces and nephews who gave her much love and support through her life's trials and tribulations and Notre Dame's tumultuous football history. Ann was a devout Catholic throughout her life, and the funeral will be held on Wednesday, December 17, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church. The service will be followed by her burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery, with a luncheon at Holy Family Community Center to follow.
