Albertha "Birdie" Edna (Brockopp) Lee experienced life to the fullest.
Albertha Lee, 84 of Philipsburg, died on Friday, October 18, 2019 at the Granite County Medical Center after a long battle with the effects of strokes and a heart attack.
Albertha was born on March 3, 1935 in Parkers Prairie, Minnesota to Alfred and Edna Brockopp. She first lived on a farm than moved to Miltona, MN before growing up on a farm in Block Lake, MN.
When she was 18, Albertha met Edmund "Ed" Lee when she was walking back to the farm. Ed was on leave from the Army and was with his parents fishing on Block Lake. Ed went back to Korea and got out in 1954. He went to Butte, MT to work in the mines.
Albertha graduated from Parkers Prairie High School in 1953. After graduation, Albertha was a housekeeper in Crookston, MN where she took care of twin babies and two school aged children. After about 9 months, she moved to Minneapolis, MN to work in a laundry.
October 17, 1955 Ed got an "Authorized Leave of Absence" from the Anaconda Copper Mining Company in Butte, MT with the excuse of "illness in the family". Probably "Lovesick" since he jumped in his car and drove to Minneapolis, MN and got Albertha. Then it was off to Mason City, IA where they eloped on October 19, 1955.
After getting married, they drove back to Butte, MT where Ed worked until 1959. While in Butte, her son Mark and daughter Debra were born. When there wasn't as much work in the mines, they moved to Philipsburg where Ed worked with the Forest Service and Job Corp. Jeffery was born in Phillipsburg.
Albertha was very energetic and loved the great outdoors of Montana. She was a very avid hunter, loved fishing, had a green thumb, could've possibly out shot Annie Oakley, could knit/crotchet any design, would convince Ed to do house projects by initiating initial dismantling, wrote numerous letters to folks who needed words of caring, mowed other people's yards, cooked, baked, liked riding on the back of the touring motorcycle, enjoyed camping, was a firm loving parent and was dedicated to her faith.
Albertha will be missed by her children, Mark, Debra and Jeffery; relatives and friends.
Celebration of Life Ceremony for Albertha will be held on Friday, November 1, 2019 starting at 2:30 p.m. at the Granite County Medical Nursing Center Dining Room in Philipsburg, with visitation from 2:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
