Agnes "Sis" Peterson

November 11, 1923 — January 22, 2016

Sis (Agnes) Peterson was peacefully released from her mortal sorrows Thursday evening, January 21st. She went to the Lord while surrounded by her family at her home. Sis was born on Armistice Day in 1923 to Peter and Annie (Glenn) Aspholm, and grew up in Goosetown with her two brothers John and Robert (Babe). She was raised during the worst of times in the toughest conditions. Her father died in the flu epidemic in 1928, leaving her mother to raise them alone during the Great Depression. She often related tales of the hardships (at great length) living with her grandparents and six people living on $45 a month with her grandfather, Andrew, a penny-pinching Scotsman. She graduated from St. Peter's High School where she was taught to play the organ and Catholic ceremonies. This began her service to the Anaconda Catholic community as an organist at St. Peter's, then St. Joseph's and Holy Family churches for nearly 50 years. She often accompanied her favorite baritone vocalist Ed Durkin, also recently departed, at Masses, weddings and funerals. She also imparted her love of music to her family allowing them music lessons as long as they wanted on their instrument of choice. Sis married her sweetheart Pete (Henry) Peterson after he was discharged from the Navy following World War 2 on January 3rd, 1946. Pete started a painting and contracting business and Sis took care of the bookkeeping and raised their seven children. Pete and Sis ran the family business, "Peterson Paint", at 318 East Park Street until Pete's death in 1971, only a week after their 25th anniversary. Sis bought the building at 124 East Commercial in 1976, where she and her son Dave ran Peterson Paint until 2003. Peterson Paint was an Anaconda business pillar for 57 years. Her business life brought her so many friends in Anaconda it would be impossible to list. She treasured their company, stories, wit and knowledge that she had the chance to hear and share throughout the years. She remembered all whom helped her, laughed with her, cried with her and allowed her to help them. Pete and Sis raised seven children and helped with the grandchildren: Sylvia (Ken) Marthaller had Kenny Jr., Karl and Kurt; Robby; Dave (Sandy) Peterson had Amy and Chad; Mark (Leslie) Peterson; Celia (Orville) Anderson had Nick, Karla, Trevor and Dana; Teresa (John) Hucal had Erika and Emily; and Karla Peterson. She also had numerous great and great-great grandchildren, nephews and nieces. The hard part about living so long (Sis said ‘Getting old ain't for the young') is that most of the people you know are gone before you. Sis was preceded in death by her son Rob in 1969, husband Pete in 1971, daughter Sylvia Marthaller in 1989; son-in-law Ken Marthaller in 1992, grandson Trevor Anderson in 2007, and daughter Karla Peterson in 2012. The rest of Sis' family also preceded her in death: mother Annie Aspholm, brothers (and sister-in-laws) John (Helen) Aspholm and Babe (Sadie) Aspholm, sister and (brother-in-law) Elvira (Bob) Robbins, and very special friends, Mary Jane Stokke, Fran Sullivan and Edward Durkin. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to The Montana State Chapel, PO Box 300, Warm Springs, MT 59756.
