Sandra Clawson Obituary

Sandra Jean Sovereign-Clawson (Sandi) went peacefully to heaven on June 25, 2015 surrounded by her family. Born on November 21, 1942 to Virginia Larivee and Gene Sovereign, Sandi grew up under the watchful eye of her big brother Kenneth. She attended Catholic schools as a child and received a nursing degree in 1997 from Montana Tech and studied social work at the University of Montana. She also studied cosmetology and created hairstyles for her kids and their friends. She worked at a variety of locations including Warm Springs, and as a Cultural Specialist at the Anaconda Indian Alliance.
When Sandi was young, she married Donald Werst and lived in Texas where Don was in the Army. When they divorced, she returned to Anaconda and married Vernon ‘Brick' Clawson, the love of her life. After living in small communities throughout Montana, they settled in Opportunity with their four children. Sandi was also blessed with three step-children.
Sandi was a collector of angels, dolls, books and antiques. She enjoyed reading medical and art books, learning belly dance and piano, studying Native American medical techniques, playing Pinochle, swimming, fishing, and camping. She designed porcelain dolls and doll houses, and loved crocheting and drawing.
Sandi loved traveling and visiting museums, historical, and religious sites. She had always dreamed of visiting Paris, France, and finally had a chance to do so with her daughters in 2012. She was blessed to attend a mass at Norte Dame Cathedral while she was there.
Sandi loved playing with and teaching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their friends. Sandi was so happy to hear her children's friends note, ‘Sandi was like a second mother to me.' She volunteered at her children's schools, as a Boy Scout Den Mother for her sons, with drama, band, Special Olympics, March of Dimes and Hospice. She also performed alongside her children in the 1983 Anaconda Centennial Play.
Sandi was giving by nature. She sponsored children from third-world countries for many years, even when she had little to give. She shared with her daughter, Dannette, that she would always be with her during her advocacy work. Sandi was also an organ donor.
To honor Sandi's legacy, memorial gifts may be given to Safe Kids Missoula by calling 406.926.2522.
Sandi was preceded in death by her parents, brother Kenneth (Mae) Sovereign, husband Vernon Clawson, daughter Cindy Clawson, grandson Tristan Killoy and great granddaughter, Aurora Ryan.
She is survived by her children: Stewart (Jodi) Clawson, Stacie Clawson, Raymond (Cheryle) Clawson, Dannette (Tod) Fadness, Verna ‘Bunny' Schaff, and Craig Potvin.
