Maurine Yelsa Obituary

Maurine Yelsa, 95

Maurine A. (Johnson Hamry) Yelsa passed away on August 4, 2016, in Kennewick, Washington. She was born on July 22, 1921 in Hamilton, Montana to Hennes and Neota (Para) Johnson, the youngest of four children.

The family moved to Butte when Maurine was about 4. She graduated from Butte High School in 1939 and began working as a data input clerk. She married Olaf ("Bud") Hamry June 2, 1941, and they had two daughters, Linda (Eggen) and Mary Budette (Newton). After Bud passed in 1944, Maurine worked as a comptometer operator at The Texas Company and raised her daughters as a single mother during World War II with the support of her family. She remarried in 1950, to William ("Bill") Yelsa and moved to Opportunity. The two were married for 62 years, until Bill preceded her in death in 2012. Maurine spent her last five years in Richland and Kennewick, Washington, where she was cared for by her daughter Linda and later at Serenity Cove. The family gives them and everyone else who cared for Maurine their greatest gratitude.

Maurine loved to dance. She met both Bud and Bill on the dance floor. In 1958, she opened Maurine's Dance Studio in Anaconda, where she taught ballet, tap, jazz, modern dance, tumbling, and even breakdancing to generations of children. Her annual dance recitals gave her great joy and satisfaction and her costume closet was unrivalled. At 95 she was still tapping her feet to music.

Maurine was devoted to her family and enjoyed spending time with them, from local family gatherings, to regular visits to Butte to see her sisters, to road trips to visit more distant family. She will remembered for her loving nature and sweet disposition, her active life, her love of fashion, and her sweet tooth. She was dearly loved and will be sorely missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Harold, and her sisters Catherine Buckley and Nettie Mae Hagenson.

Maurine is survived by her daughters, Linda Hamry Eggen (Dale) of Richland, Washington and Mary Budette Hamry Newton of Post Falls, Idaho; by her grandchildren April Newton DeNike (Spokane, Washington; Roy Newton (Lena) of Newport Beach, California; Marietta Eggen Newland (Nick Newland) of Redmond, Washington; Heather Eggen Bowman (Jim Bowman) of Portland, Oregon and Nathan Eggen (Adrian Soucek) of Seattle, Washington; and by her great-grandchildren Matthew, Hannah, Jonas, Noah, Lily, and Samuel Newland; Abby and Danny DeNike; and Jack and Luke Newton; and by many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Maurine was a parishioner at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Anaconda. Friends and family are asked to join the family there on August 12, 2016. A Rosary will be led at 10:00 a.m. and the Mass of the Resurrection will begin at 10:30 a.m. A reception will follow in the church hall. All are welcome to join the family.
