Mark Durkin Obituary

Mark Edward ("Durk") Durkin, 53, of Anaconda passed away on March 6, 2020, at St. Patrick's Hospital (ICU) in Missoula. Mark was a longtime Anaconda resident and Corrections Officer for the Anaconda - Deer Lodge County Police Department.

Mark passed away in the presence of his loving and adoring family, after fighting a sudden onset of severe pancreatitis (medication related). He became suddenly ill Sunday afternoon, was immediately admitted to Anaconda's Community Hospital, but was flown to St. Pat's ICU Monday evening via helicopter, and unfortunately passed this past Friday.

Mark was born on June 2, 1966, to Ed and Rosie (Sullivan) Durkin, longtime educators and instructors in Anaconda and Butte, and his birthday was a mere 4-days before his parents' June 6th wedding anniversary (which they celebrated more than 50 years of marriage). He was the youngest of five children and was, by all family accounts (but his) the most nurtured and protected by his Mom and Dad. He grew up on East Commercial Ave. in Anaconda's vibrant Goosetown neighborhood, where he was never short of childhood friends and activities.

Mark was raised in an Irish Catholic home and was provided personal direction and spiritual guidance from his parents and fellow members of St. Peter's Parish in the diverse Goosetown neighborhood. He attended elementary school at St. Peter's and St. Joseph's before moving to Lincoln Elementary when Anaconda's Catholic schools closed in the early 1970s. After Lincoln, he attended Anaconda Jr. High School (7th - 9th) and Anaconda High School (then Class AA) where he graduated in 1985.

Mark loved sports and outdoor activities of any variety. He played football and wrestled throughout his formative youthful and high school years. He joked that he was the unwilling sparring partner to his older brothers and sisters occasional disagreements and scruffs.

After high school, Mark joined the U.S. Army reserves while working for the local Butte Pepsi distributorship. He then entered active service in the U.S. Air Force where he became a Security Specialist and was stationed at Malstrom AFB. He had four years of honorable service and following discharge returned to southwestern Montana where he again worked for the Pepsi Distributorship. He then joined the Anaconda - Deer Lodge County Police Department where he has served as a corrections and transport Officer for the past 15 years.

Mark did have a small degree of contrarian in him as he loved to root for the Bobcats and the University of Michigan over the more locally favored Notre Dame and UM. To his credit, he wasn't shy about letting everyone know these preferences.

Mark was very humble and naturally good natured. He loved to say "Hello, how she go?" to family, friends and new acquaintances. His laugh, which he loved to do often, was loud and contagious. He was genuine in all of his personal and professional affairs and was a true believer and performer of the Golden Rule. He did not have a mean bone in his body (notwithstanding his "Killer" nickname) and was always willing to help, which he performed upon request and frequently on his own volition. He was respectful and kind to all he met and was incredibly loyal in his support.

Mark loved southwestern Montana and believed in service to his community. He was a proud member of the Anaconda Deer Lodge Co. Police Department, the Anaconda Police Protective Association and Teamsters Local #2 (Butte). He was also a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH), the American Legion, and supported and provided assistance to many other local service organizations.

Mark loved his family dearly; particularly all of his nieces and nephews, and his presence and strength will be sorely missed, but cherished and fondly remembered always.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Rosemary (Sullivan) Durkin, and many other aunts and uncles in the Anaconda Durkin - Butte Sullivan Clans. He is survived by his siblings and their spouses, Clarice (Bill) Fischer, Missoula; Maureen (Don) Tweedy, Anaconda; Patrick Durkin, Helena; and Tim Durkin (Lisette Carter) of Spokane; and by his nieces / nephews Bill, Amanda, Elizabeth, and Joanna Fischer (Missoula); Benjamin Sparrow and Seamus Tweedy (Anaconda); Kyle Durkin (Helena); and Matthew, Carter and Lisette Durkin (Spokane); and great nephews Reilley and Austin Durkin (Helena), and Jaxson Sparrow (Anaconda). He is also survived many other Durkin - Sullivan relatives in Montana and across the country. Mark is further survived by many close personal and family friends, which he and his siblings considered part of the larger Durkin-Sullivan family.

The family extends its appreciation to the several Anaconda and Missoula medical professionals that provided critical care and assistance to him during this sudden and severe illness.

Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, March 13, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Anaconda, with the Mass of the Resurrection and Celebration of Life being held at 10:30 a.m. The AOH will give a presentation during the visitation before Mass.
