Kathleen Kovacich Obituary

Kathleen Kovacich died peacefully at home in Redding, California. Kathleen was born in Butte, Montana, on October 15, 1926. She married Matt Kovacich in 1949, and raised 6 children in Anaconda, Montana and Fullerton, California. She moved to Redding, California after the death of Matt in 2007.

She attended St. Joseph Grade School in Butte, Montana, and graduated from Butte High School. After graduation, she worked for a year at the Boeing plant in Seattle working on airplanes for the war effort. When she came back to Butte, she did her training at Nursing School in Deer Lodge, where she became a Registered Nurse, and then worked at both the Galen and Warm Springs hospitals.

Kathleen's early life was chiseled with hardship, as she struggled but overcame asthma. Her father was a tough man who immigrated from Ireland, and her mother was beautiful and loving. She gained great strength from this, with strong personality and friendships. Early on, she knew exactly who she wanted to be, "a mother of nine and (of course) a strong marriage!"

She met Matt Kovacich in Deer Lodge. They married in 1949 and started their family in Anaconda. They had 6 children. Caring for a mentally limited daughter involved moving to California in 1964. She gave every bit of devotion to her five outstanding sons and daughter, always elated at their remarkable accomplishments in scholarships and athletics.

After the children moved on, she and Matt developed a new life, centered around the Sequoia Health Club ("The Club") in Buena Park, Californa. They were avid bowlers. Kathleen became adept at Tai Chi, and continued her lifelong love of reading. She and Matt followed, with joy, the marriages of their children, and the many grandchildren and great grandchildren that came during these years.

After Matt's death in February, 2007, she moved to Redding, California, where she stayed at the Hallmark House, under the watchful eye of her son, Dan. She died peacefully on July 5, 2014, with Dan by her side.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her father Bill Carroll, mother Hannah (Gallagher) Carroll, her sister Margaret and brother, Bill Carroll, and youngest daughter, Linda. Kathleen is survived by her brother Tom Carroll, and children, Michael and wife Susan, Daniel, Thomas and wife Sherry, Margaret Goodrich and husband Ed, Martin and wife Marianne. She is also survived by 9 grand children and 4 great grandchildren.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be presided by Rev. Dougald McCallum on Saturday, July 26, at St. Peter's Church in Anaconda, Montana, at 10:00 a.m. followed by burial at Mount Carmel Cemetery where she will be joining her husband Matt and daughter Linda.
