John Barclay Obituary

John Thomas Barclay, wonderful dad, husband, patriot, businessman, and an exceedingly kind gentleman, surrounded by his family, passed away peacefully on August 11th. John was born February 14, 1926 in McHenry, North Dakota to Kreston and June Bruner Barclay. John, the oldest of nine children and his family moved to Bozeman, MT for a short time where he attended school; and eventually the Barclay family settled in Anaconda. At the age of 17, John enlisted in the U.S. Navy. However, because of the age limit, his enlistment did not go into effect until the day after his 18th birthday. During World War II, John served aboard the USS Teton in the Pacific Theatre. While home from World War II, he met the love of his life, Dorothy Martelli, while ice skating at the Anaconda Commons. They married on April 12, 1947, later celebrating over 50 years or marriage. In August 1950, with two young daughters, John returned to active duty, serving our country in the Korean conflict. Upon returning home from the war, John and Dorothy welcomed their third daughter.

John began his professional career at the Montana Hotel, Rocky Mountain Brewing Co. and Sugrue Bottling, eventually managing the Park Cafe & Lounge. In the late 1960's, John purchased the Turf Bar and transformed the establishment into the popular, "Barclay's Bar and Lounge." After retiring and selling Barclay's Bar, John joined his wife and sister-in-law at Barclay II serving the customers cocktails and engaging in lively conversation until he was 82 years old.

John was consistently involved in state and local activities, including: City Council member, Police Commissioner, Tavern Association member (founder of the Tavern Association Golf Tournament), 60 year member of the American Legion, Veteran of Foreign Wars member, Fraternal Order of the Elks member, and a member of the Anaconda Country Club.

John was a man of the people, with a heart of gold, smile brighter than the sun, personality of a comedian and the presence of an angel. He treated everyone like a friend, knew most people on a first name basis and would have given anyone the shirt off his back. John loved many things in life including: his Country, the Navy, his family, ice cream, his dogs, beer and Fox News.

John is survived by his daughters: Diana (John) Flood of Idaho, Sandy (George) Mattson of Anaconda, and Karen (Russ) Fagg of Billings; grandchildren: Tammy Hurley, Lisa and Clay Landon, George and Jamie Mattson, Bobby Troglia, Stephanie and John Hekkel, and Harrison and Barclay Fagg; great-grandchildren: Tyler and Alexandra Hurley, Vincent and Anthony Troglia, Vatore and Thomas Hekkel, Indie Landon, and Arieona, Chanse and Bridger Mattson; siblings: Lenora Tuttle, Tommy Barclay, Betty Williams, Bobby Barclay, Richie (Sue) Barclay, Greg (Marilyn) Barclay; brother-in-law: Gil Reich; sisters-in-law: Linda Barclay, Ann Shoemaker, Isabelle Martelli, Mary Martelli.
