In the early morning of June 9, 2016, just as the birds were beginning their wake-up calls, Ada Ewan passed from this life into eternity. She was surrounded by her children, and we are certain she was welcomed at the gates of heaven by her Lord and Savior and many, many loved ones.
Helen Ada Schmitt was born on February 26, 1925, in a log cabin on Bridger Creek, between Reed Point and Columbus, Montana. She joined her parents, Louie and Ella Schmitt, as well as her older brother, Louie Jr. She lived on Bridger Creek, in Reed Point and Columbus as a child and graduated from Columbus High School. Mom was proud to be from Reed Point and Columbus and had many lifelong friends in that area.
While working as a beautician in Livingston, she met her future husband, Alva Ewan. They were married on Jan. 5, 1947. Alva and Ada settled in Dillon, where their first two children were born- first Gene, then John. The family moved to Anaconda, where their family grew with the births of Kathy, Charlie, David, and Mary Ellen. Ada's life work was that of a mother, and she did it well. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with her whole heart, and enjoyed times with her family more than anything. She taught us all to play cribbage, and enjoyed games of any kind with her family. Her fridge door was a testament to that love. If your name or picture were in the newspaper, you can bet it was displayed proudly on Mom's fridge. She had a gift of making everyone feel welcome- no one left Ada's house a stranger. She was never more happy and content than when she was holding a baby, which proved to be helpful throughout the years with her 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Ada loved the mountains and spent summers at "the camp" at Georgetown Lake. Nature's beauty was not wasted on her. She sketched and painted as a hobby and loved to take rides just to sight see. Mountains and old cabins were favorite subjects for Ada to paint. She also made pressed flower pictures, and knew the names of every wildflower you can imagine. She attended church regularly in the summer at St. Timothy's Chapel, which sits high atop a mountain, her favorite place to be. Ada had a deep faith in God from an early age. She believed in a loving and caring God, and lived her life in a loving and caring manner. She was always doing for others in her kind and humble fashion. She was a volunteer for the Adult Literacy Program, the Foster Grandparents Program, and the Call-a-Friend program. She also lent a hand to many friends in ways too numerous to mention. Ada didn't judge others and welcomed friends of her children, and anyone who walked through her door, into her home with grace and acceptance. She had great respect for the Bible, which was her favorite book. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Anaconda and served many roles there. There was an on-going joke in our house that if there was a dessert on the table, you better check to make sure it wasn't going to church before you had a taste...more often than not, it was going to church. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Tammany Twirlers square dancing group, which her and Dad enjoyed doing for many years. She attended the Metcalf Senior Center for years and had many friends there, where she ate lunch and played dominoes and pinochle, as well as visited and kept up on the latest goings-on in Anaconda.
Ada was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Alva Ewan; her brother Louie Schmitt; and her son-in-law Larry Puccinelli; as well as many in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends.
Ada is survived by her children: Gene (Dene) Ewan of LaPush, WA; John (Janice) Ewan of Livingston; Kathy Puccinelli of Anaconda; Charlie Ewan of Anaconda; Dave (Terri) Ewan of Helena; and Mary (Mark) Robertson of Helena; sister-in-law Lois Schmitt of Helena; sister-in-law Evie Ewan of Three Forks; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to recognize those who took amazing care of our mom, those who took the time to visit, and those who loved her as much as we did. She was a wonderful lady and she will be missed greatly.

Celebration of Life Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 14th at the First Presbyterian Church, at 4th and Main in Anaconda. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the services at the church.
Interment will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15th at the Mount View Cemetery at Columbus, MT.
