Gertrude Flynn Obituary

Gertrude Ann (Reardon) Martin Flynn passed away peacefully in her assisted living home on Tuesday March 31, 2015- just two weeks shy of her 95th birthday. She was a larger than life character who never met a stranger. She lived a long and full life.

Gert was born in Anaconda on April 16, 1920 to Charlotte and James Raymond Reardon. She attended St. Peter's elementary and High School in Anaconda. She graduated from Columbus School of Nursing in Great Falls becoming a Registered Nurse. She joined the Army Nurse Corps as a Lieutenant and proudly served her country for three years in New Guinea and the Philippines. Gert was a gifted story teller and none were better than her "war" stories.

She returned to Montana as a nurse at Fort Harrison in Helena. She married her lifelong friend, George Martin and they were blessed with four children, George (Kitty) Martin of Yucca Valley, CA. and another son who died at birth, Walter Raymond, and twin girls, Betty Rae (Peter) Feldman of Wellington, CO and Mary Ann (Jack) Kovacich of Great Falls, Montana. Unfortunately George Sr. did not live to see his twin girls and Gert became a single mother raising three children. She later married Tom Flynn and became mother to sons, John Flynn (preceded her in death) and Father Tom Flynn of Atlanta, Georgia. Tom Sr. had already lost a son, Jim Flynn. Tom and Gert had a daughter, Rose Marie (Bob) Flynn of Silverdale, Washington. Tom Sr. passed away and Gert made sure this Martin-Flynn family stayed together. Her legacy will forever be that of a strong and beautiful mother.

She returned to nursing in the late 1960's, working in home health and becoming "Gert the nurse" at Head Start for 17 years. She retired in 1988, often saying if she knew she was going to live so long she never would have retired at age 68. She stayed active in the Anaconda Catholic Community Church, American Legion and Ancient Order of Hibernians. She was proud of her Anaconda roots and lived independently until three years ago when she moved to New Horizons Assisted Living. There she found her second home shared with many friends. Her children are grateful for the care by the staff at New Horizons, and Anaconda Hospice and Pintler Home Health. They are also indebted to her beloved cousins, nieces and nephews for always being there for her.

Family and Faith were everything to Gert and she instilled that in her children, twelve grandchildren, Katie (Jim) Keen, Kelli (Bill) Norwood, Craig (Susan) Kovacich, Mark (Melissa) Kovacich, Diana Kovacich, Shauna (Jake) Verlanic, Sharla (Tyson) McGuffin, Laura (Nolan) Lenz, Sarah Feldman, Brady Flynn, Colin Flynn and Alanna Flynn, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.

One of eight children, she is also survived by her sister, Charlotte Stensvold of San Francisco. She was predeceased by her brother, James Reardon and sisters, Marie Reardon, Florence Olson, Eleanor Merrick, Rita Solan and Jerry Jenkins; and her "best friend" and sister-in-law, Betty Martin Dorlarque.
