Roy Lorengo Obituary
Roy Henry Lorengo was born on June 3, 1928 in Kent, WA to Emil and Esther (Johnson) Lorengo; an only child, as his parents believed in quality not quantity (according to Roy). Soon after his birth, the Lorengo family moved to Butchertown - a small area North of Walkerville, MT. Roy attended both grade and middle school at the Sherman School where he rode his horse to school every day. He went on to graduate from Butte High School. While attending high school, he got his first job at the Sunkiss Dairy Ranch as a ranch hand.
In 1951, he married the love of his life Catherine (Tiny) Galetti. Roy and Tiny began their life together in Butte where they were blessed with 3 boys Roy, Clifford and Robert. They lived there for several years until they moved to Anaconda where they were blessed with 1 "spoiled" girl, Darla, who came along in 1969. It should be noted that Roy was highly devoted to Tiny and wherever the two went, you could bet they would be holding hands.
In the early years Roy worked a variety of jobs to support his family; he was a bronc rider in the rodeo circuit, he worked at MT Hardware, the Berkeley Pit, and the Anaconda Company. In 1964, during the Anaconda Company strikes, he and his cousin Bob Paynter started a logging company. In 1970, Roy ventured out on his own and formed Lorengo Logging - a business that is still in operation today. Roy loved the woods and one of the things he cherished the most was working with his 3 sons and son in law for 50 plus years. Roy believed Lorengo Logging was not just a business, it was the family's way of life. Roy took great pride in the comradery that existed between him, Roy Mark, Cliff, Bob, and Lee. Lorengo Logging did not have the opportunity to observe many holidays but Roy made an executive decision that when a grand or great-grand child was born it was an observed holiday and everyone would shut down and go the hospital to meet the new family member. During his 51 years in the logging business Roy established many great relationships with landowners, mills, agencies, and fellow loggers and was highly respected among all who had the fortune to work with him. Roy never retired; he operated the skidder until age 86 and then transitioned to full time caregiver for Tiny. It brings a smile to our face to know that he is once again skidding logs.
Roy had many hobbies and interests including hunting, fishing, camping and trapping. However, one of his greatest passions was music. Roy was an accomplished guitarist and enjoyed picking and playing for friends and family. In fact, he, his son Cliff, daughter in law Judy, and friend Mike Anderson formed the band The Country Drifters. The Country Drifters performed at various venues in the Butte/Anaconda/Deer Lodge/P'Burg area for over 10 years and were crowd favorites wherever they played. In later years Roy and Tiny found fun in horse racing and could often be found at Lucky Strike or Katie O'Keefes in Missoula betting on the ponies.
Family was Roy's first priority and greatest accomplishment. He and Tiny's home on Yankee Flats was not only their home, but the family headquarters and hub for many family gatherings and events. Over the years, Roy and Tiny would entertain the whole family with significant emphasis on Saturday evening fried chicken dinner buckets from the Embassy Club. For Roy, life was about the simple things, and being around friends and family and making memories, was the ultimate gift he left all of us! Roy's quick wit, joking personality and playful smile will always be cherished and missed by everyone that knew him.
Roy is preceded in death by his parents Emil and Esther Lorengo, his in-laws Irene and Marce Galetti and brother in law Marce Galetti Jr.
Roy is survived by his wife of 66 years Tiny, his sons Roy (Diann) Lorengo, Cliff (Judy) Lorengo, Bob Lorengo (Cheri) and daughter Darla (Lee) Klemann all of Anaconda, 10 grandchildren; Robyn (Andy) Grinolds, Bryan (Kim) Lorengo, Paul (Jenn) Lorengo, Jennifer (Jeff) VandeKop, Joe (Kris) Lorengo, Bobbi Jo Lorengo, Trish (Corey) Heffernan, Scott (Brittany) Lorengo, Kellie Lorengo, and Rylee Klemann, 21 great-grandchildren, sisters in law Catherine (Toots) Galetti, Mary Jane (Ken) Fink, and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held for Roy on Friday October 13, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Longfellow Finnegan Riddle Funeral Home in Anaconda, MT. There will be an hour of visitation prior to the service. Luncheon to follow at Anaconda Country Club, Opportunity, MT.
