Mary Ann Tonkovich

Mary Ann Tonkovich passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at Deer Lodge Care Center in Deer Lodge, Montana.
Mary was born on May 7, 1926 in Anaconda, Montana, to John and Irene Kriskovich. She was the oldest of six children; Evelyn Hekkel, Eileen Blodnick (deceased), Louis Kriskovich (deceased), Rosalie Kriskovich, and Kathy Bleile.
Mary attended St. Peter's Catholic grade school and Anaconda Central Catholic high school, where she graduated valedictorian. She also was a member of the church choir. After graduating, she attended Great Falls College of Education on a scholarship. She received a War time emergency certificate, and went on to teach Grades 1-8 in a small country school in Argenta, Montana.
On July 9, 1953, Mary married George Tonkovich at St. Peter's Church. They honeymooned in Montana and then traveled by train to California to visit friends and relatives.
After settling in Anaconda, they started their family in 1956. They had eight children; Rose, Alice, Bob (deceased), Joe, Annie, Steve, Mary (deceased), and Jim. They educated all their children in both Catholic and public schools.
Mary was known for going to her children's school and sporting events. She also was a big proponent for reading and enjoyed reading stories to her children.
Mary worked at Woolworth's Variety Store both as a cashier and in a variety of other departments. She also volunteered for the Anaconda Head Start program.
Mary had many interests and hobbies including; cooking, fly fishing, canning, picnicking, crafting, embroidery, listening to music, playing cards and board games (particularly Scrabble), and traveling.
She also enjoyed trips that she took to MT, CA, WA, OR, ND, HI, NY, VA, IL, ID, MN& Canada. She enjoyed sewing and was a member of the sewing club. Mary enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandson.
Worship was very important to Mary and she attended both St. Paul's and Holy Family Catholic Church where she volunteered and participated in several committees. She also participated in naming Holy Family Catholic Church.
Baking was one of the things that Mary enjoyed the most. She was famous for her baked goods and poviticas that she had baked for over 20 years and shipped all over the world.
Mary had a memory that was unbelievable! She could remember people and events from more than 75 years ago. Many people would call her for information that they had forgotten over the years.
She loved to talk on the phone and was fluent at talking Croatian with friends and relatives.
Mary will be cherished and missed by the many people she had contact with.
Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 11th at Holy Family Catholic Church with the Rosary at 6:30 p.m. and the Vigil following at 7:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church on Friday, January 12th. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the service.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Anaconda Head Start Program, Holy Family Parish discretionary fund, or the Anaconda Grumpy Old Men.
