James Hebnes Obituary

James Roger Hebnes age 85 passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2016 at Granite County Medical Center, where he had resided for the last several years.

He was born on June 17, 1931 to John and Zella Hebnes in Livingston, MT, and grew up in the Wilsall, White Sulphur Springs and Castle area. He graduated from Wilsall High School and Western Montana College in Dillon, where he also excelled in football, basketball and track. In 1956 he married Nancy Ralston, his wife of 60 years. Together they have a daughter Marie and son Bob.

Jim's teaching career began first in Townsend MT. From 1956-1958 he served in Germany in the Army. Upon his return, he resumed his teaching career in Reedpoint, MT where he was also the boys basketball coach. In 1962 the family relocated to Philipsburg, MT where he taught mainly junior high math, civics and MT History until his retirement in 1987. He also was the junior high basketball coach in the earlier years at Philipsburg.

In addition to his teaching career Jim worked for the Forest Service during the summer. Part of his job was visiting with and providing information to people visiting the campgrounds and forest areas. He would see people he had met in the campgrounds nearly every place he travelled.

Jim's faith was important to him, and he was a long-time member of the Philipsburg Community Church. He served for many years in various capacities on its Board of Directors and volunteered his time extensively. He also served on the Philipsburg Town Council in the early 1980's.

In retirement Jim continued to enjoy his lifelong activities of hunting, fishing, ice fishing, camping and wood cutting. In the Spring, he was always in demand for his expertise at roto-tilling. He was able to spend time with his grandchildren and helped them in their interests in athletics and leisure outdoor activities. He was also able to attend many of their school and sporting events.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, brothers John Wilbur and Martin, sister Mary Stanley and brothers in law Gene Stanley, Loyd Goffena and Stephen Lemmer. He is survived by his wife Nancy, daughter Marie Hebnes (Tim Chute), son Bob (Nina) Hebnes and grandchildren James Hebnes and Krista Hebnes. He is also survived by brothers Ted (Peggy) Hebnes and John (Fran) Hebnes, and sisters Zelda Cellucci, Erma Goffena, and Ella (Dean) Officer, and brother in law Bill (Ardis) Ralston and sister in law Judy Lemmer. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Rest in peace as the year 2016 closes. We love you and will miss you every day. Memorials to Granite County Medical Center, 310 Sansome St., Philipsburg, MT are requested with thanks for the wonderful care they provided Jim these past few years.
